TALWEG \’tälּּ veg
'Talweg’ is German in origin (tal = valley, weg = path) and in English refers to the path a river creates in a landscape. The geometry of a river’s Talweg is determined by parameters like the slope of the land, the underlying geology, and the volume of water flowing in the river.
Likewise the form a building takes is determined by parameters including user requirements, the design concept, external forces like wind and snow, and material properties.
With hard work, collaboration, and skill an engineered structure can satisfy the relevant design parameters and still have a purposeful beauty analogous to that of a river flowing through a landscape- the Talweg.
